چکیده

Measurements of the C-H overtone transition strengths combined with estimates of the photodissociation cross sections for these transitions suggest that near-IR photodissociation of peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) is less significant (Jnear−IR≈3×10 s−1 at noon) in the lower atmosphere than competing sinks resulting from unimolecular decomposition and ultraviolet photolysis. This is in contrast to the photochemical behavior of a related peroxy nitrate, pernitric acid (PNA), that undergoes rapid near-IR photolysis in the atmosphere with Jnear−IR≈10 s−1 at noon (Roehl et al., 2002). This difference is attributed to the larger binding energy and larger number of vibrational degrees of freedom in PAN, which make 4νCH the lowest overtone excitation with a high photodissociation yield (as opposed to 2νOH in PNA).

Evidence of reactive aromatics as a major source of peroxy acetyl nitrate over China.

We analyze the observations of near-surface peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) and its precursors in Beijing, China in August of 2007. The levels of PAN are remarkably high (up to 14 ppbv), surpassing those measured over other urban regions in recent years. Analyses employing a 1-D version of a chemical transport model (Regional chEmical and trAnsport Model, REAM) indicate that aromatic non-methane hy...

Near-IR cavity ringdown spectroscopy and kinetics of the isomers and conformers of the butyl peroxy radical.

Cavity ringdown spectra of butyl peroxy radicals have been obtained for their A-X electronic transition in the near-IR. The radicals were produced by two independent chemical methods, allowing unambiguous assignment of the spectra of the four butyl peroxy isomers with probable conformer assignments also possible for a number of cases. Using the analyzed spectra semiquantatively, isomer specific...

Detection and Characterization of Alkyl Peroxy Radicals Using Cavity Ringdown Spec- Troscopy

Peroxy radicals form a class of important intermediates in oxidation chemistry. In recent years much effort has been put into the study of the kinetics of peroxy radicals largely via monitoring their broad and structureless A A UV absorption transition. The A A electronic transition of the peroxies, residing in the near-IR region, has also been observed, but due to the relative inaccessibility ...

Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy of the à − X̃ Electronic Transition of the CH 3 C ( O ) O 2 Radical

Cavity ringdown spectra of the near IR Ã2A′ − X̃2A′′ electronic transition of acetyl peroxy radical and its perdeutero analogue are reported. The electronic origin for the CH3C(O)O2 is observed at 5582.5(5) cm−1. Extensive ab initio calculations have been carried out to predict frequencies and help assign the electronic origin, observed vibrational hot bands and several à state vibrational frequ...

Measurements of the sum of HO2NO2 and CH3O2NO2 in the remote troposphere

The chemistry of peroxynitric acid (HO2NO2) and methyl peroxynitrate (CH3O2NO2) is predicted to be particularly important in the upper troposphere where temperatures are frequently low enough that these compounds do not rapidly decompose. At temperatures below 240 K, we calculate that about 20% of NOy in the midand high-latitude upper troposphere is HO2NO2. Under these conditions, the reaction ...
